Barreca & La Varra guest curators of Milano Design Film Festival 2020/21

“Ciak in Italy. Foreign directors in the Italian landscape” is the section curated by the architects of the eighth edition of the exhibition entitled “Ri-connettersi”, which takes place in “phygital” form from 6 to 8 November 2020.

“THE THEME. As usual, MDFF associates a specific point of view to each edition. The guiding theme of this edition, chosen by the curators Silvia Robertazzi and Porzia Bergamasco, is re-connect. In the reflections triggered by the pandemic, the word “re-connect” wants to revive a sort of tamtam to awaken attention and conscience on the priorities of collective life and the Planet. The momentary interruption of the lockdown has led to the consideration that it is necessary to rethink the past and rebuild a more conscious present-future and in harmony with Nature and the very life of each of us. The MDFF program has adopted these thoughts to investigate design methods and their applications and to show how architecture and design can contribute to reconnection to improve the human experience. Through the selection of films we have
investigated the man-nature relationship, the man-city dynamics, the real needs of citizens, the work of the designer. With an increasingly transversal look we explored the field of scientific research, food and automotive. The attention has therefore shifted to the changing articulations of contemporary society, to the complexity of the economic and social processes that today produce the city, the territory, the environment.

CIAK IN ITALY. Foreign directors in the Italian landscape. This is the title chosen by Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra, from the architecture studio Barreca & La Varra in Milan, guest curator for this edition of the festival and for the 2021 edition. “There are not frequent incursions of foreign authors into the cities and the Italian landscape,” say the architects. “Perhaps for this very reason, starting a collection and a reflection on how foreign filmmakers have looked at our cities and our landscape as a background of stories is all the more interesting”. As a first taste of their curatorial work this year we will see “La Sapienza”, Eugène Green’s 2014 film.
