Barreca & La Varra architecture studio was born in 2008 in Milan, founded by Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra, already co-founders of Boeri Studio in 1999. Over the years the professional activity of the two architects has acquired national and international significance in the field of urban and architectural design, with the participation in competitions and the implementation of public and private assignments for important italian and foreign groups. The studio is characterized by a constant attention to the new building technologies and their employment in the experimentation of a complex architectural and urban language, careful of the changeable articulations of the contemporary society and of the complexity of economic, social and institutional processes which today produce the city, the territory and the environment. Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra place professional activity side by side with an intense advertising activity, also linked to teaching.
In 2019 the studio was named “Best Urban Architectural Design Firm 2019 – Milan” by the British magazine BUILD. Among the main awards, the German Design Award 2018 for the Misheel Expo project in Mongolia; the MIPIM Awards 2018 “Best Urban Regeneration project” for the Porta Nuova project in Milan; for the Vertical Forest, the RIBA Award for International Excellence 2018, the Best Tall Building Worldwide award 2015 of the CTBUH of Chicago, the International Highrise Award 2014 of the Frankfurt DAM; the GreenBuilding Award 2010 for the Siemens Headquarters in Milan.
